St. Paul’s Satanic Verses

Paul’s Satanic Verses (Romans 13: 1-7) concerns obedience to leaders. Parents, teachers, and leaders usually profess that they are promoting the good of their children, students and subjects, respectively. However, this is not always the case when examined more closely.

The Bible is thus often misused by evil religious leaders to legitimize the nefarious acts of evil rulers. In other words, the ‘Satanic Verses’ (Romans 13: 1-7) of St. Paul are often quoted in an attempt to legitimize criminal acts of those in a position of authority:

Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which is from God. The authorities that exist have been appointed by God. Consequently, whoever resists authority is opposing what God has set in place, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers are not a terror to good conduct, but to bad.

Do you want to be unafraid of the one in authority? Then do what is right, and you will have his approval. For he is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for he does not carry the sword in vain. He is God’s servant, an agent of retribution to the wrongdoer. Therefore it is necessary to submit to authority, not only to avoid punishment, but also as a matter of conscience. (…)

Russia’s ‘sword’ – Dictator threatens to use nuclear weapons

Of course, today’s rulers do not “carry the sword”; but they “carry the sword” in the metaphorical sense. Thus, the Russian president does not have a ‘sword’, but he has other instruments of destruction, such as nuclear weapons which he has threatened to use against the people he calls “his brothers,” the Ukrainians.

Patriarch KIriLL, St. Paul and the Satanic Verses

The leader of the Russian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Kirill, has claimed that the president was ordained by God to rule Russia:

The Lord placed you at the helm of power so that you could perform a service of special importance and great responsibility for the fate of the country and the people entrusted to your care,” Patriarch Kirill said in a recent letter to the Russian President.

In other words, Kirill does not specifically refer to Pauls’ Satanic Verses, but this is obviously implied, implying at the same time that God has given the Russian leader the authority to use the ‘sword’ (nuclear weapons) against his brothers, the Ukrainians. The irony here, of course, is that the president may not only destroy Ukraine, but also Russia and large swathes of the world, perhaps sending the world back to the ‘Dark Ages’.

One is tempted in this context to believe that the ‘pre-emptive’ ideas of Bertrand Russell were perhaps not so foolish after all. Bertrand Russell proposed that pre-emptive war should be waged on the USSR in order to maintain a US monopoly of nuclear weapons. Undoubtedly, NATO and the US have already prepared for such an armageddon scenario due to the Russian nuclear threats. There is no winner in such a scenario – but it might unfortunately be unavoidable. As of January 2023, this situation is still escalating, but hasn’t yet come to a boiling point.
